The exhibition’s title is rooted in the word numinous: for Rudolf Otto and later Carl Gustav Jung, it names the experience of a presence greater than ourselves, that mysterium tremendum et fascinans where astonishment, fear, and attraction mingle. Mircea Eliade would see in it the irruption of the sacred into the everyday. To speak of numinous figures is thus to speak of forms that are not merely looked at: they happen; they act upon us. The exhibition invites us to gauge this intensity in two artistic practices where matter is not a simple support but a living milieu: Fabienne Houzé-Ricard and Agnès Pezeu. Through their works, the numinous is not a belief; it is a way of inhabiting the world, attentive, reparative, anchored in gestures and savoir-faire that contemporary art is revaluing.

In Fabienne Houzé-Ricard’s work, the numinous figure takes the form of the nest, a sanctuary of metamorphoses unfolded through a patient repertoire: nest-earth, nest-territory, nest-house, nest-skin, nest-matrix. Paintings and drawings weave a landscape where shelter becomes skin, the hearth becomes a sensitive territory. In Nest-Roots, twigs turn into rhizomes, underground tresses reaching toward the ground, at times free, at times contained. The play of scale, from the minuscule to the overflow of the sheet in Outmeasuring the World, lays bare the tension between repair and suffocation, care and saturation: the nest protects, but it can hold too tightly. In counterpoint, the series SANS VOLER questions the bird’s symbolism of freedom. Ten monochrome bodies, seen from behind, their heads heightened with a rainbow of inks: at first alike, they gradually differ through fine variations of silhouette and plumage. Deprived of beak and feet, slightly folded in on themselves, these birds seem constrained by an invisible force. Here, the nest and the bird do not decorate; they operate as milieu-forms in which memory, care, and vertigo converge, in a thoroughly contemporary language of weaving, repair, and care.

With Agnès Pezeu, the numinous figure passes through clay, the alchemical prima materia where metamorphosis becomes tangible. The artist enters into a body-to-body with the earth: fleshy fragments, ambiguous organisms, anthropomorphic vegetal forms; scarified and perforated surfaces, then softened by crystalline glazes. The material is traversed by oppositions, gentleness and impact, attraction and threat, as if each piece were replaying Jung’s coniunctio, the union of contraries that accompanies every individuation. Ceramics becomes a site of experience: it shelters the passage from chaos to form, from cry to breath, and lets a presence-in-becoming emerge, the alchemists’ “hermaphrodite,” not as a closed figure but as a dynamic of emancipation. These works converse with lineages of visceral sculpture and with concerns central to current art: hybridizations of the living, the blurring of categories, a politics of affects. In Pezeu’s work, earth thinks and flesh breathes; glaze, between brilliance and fracture, keeps the memory of the gesture.

Thus Numinous Figures unfolds: on one side, the nest-as-world that weaves our attachments; on the other, flesh-as-matter that embraces its contradictions in order to transform. Both artists make sensibility a space of knowledge, rehabilitating patient gesture, a listening to materials, an ecology of forms. The numinous is not elsewhere: it rises here, when a just hand reveals more than it describes. To traverse the exhibition is to accept this discreet light to feel the earth beneath the images and, perhaps, to let something within us change, with a bird’s small steps, without taking flight.

Mircea Eliade veria aí a irrupção do sagrado no quotidiano.
