Madeleine Guiton’s work explores perception as an unstable experience, shaped by light, time, and the devices through which we apprehend reality. Her research resonates with the phenomenological thought of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, for whom seeing engages the body and memory as much as the gaze itself.
Working from ordinary scenes that she photographs before transposing them onto canvas, the artist focuses on the transformations that occur between lived experience, the photographic image, and painting. Framing, exposure, contrast, and light gradually alter what was originally seen.
Whether natural, artificial, or emitted by a screen, light becomes an active material, revealing certain elements while causing others to recede. The images oscillate between familiarity and indeterminacy, between what is given to the eye and what the gaze reconstructs.
